About Jeff

As a life-long musician, Jeff was naturally drawn toward working with pianos. Over 30 years ago he dropped in on an Austin Piano Technicians Guild meeting and was invited to work for Bernard Mollberg at his highly respected piano restoration shop. Through several years he learned the trade including all aspects of rebuilding, refinishing, reconditioning and repairs – all before learning to tune.

Following that, Jeff worked at Strait Music Company for many years, eventually managing the store’s piano shop. He was then offered a job in the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin, where he worked a half-time position for over a decade. While there he also founded Jeff Farris Piano Service to maintain pianos for music venues, studios, churches, and private homes throughout the greater Austin area.

Jeff is a multi-instrumentalist who lives in South Austin, writes songs, plays in multiple bands, and enjoys spending time with his wife, three kids, and seven grandkids.

Jeff is a member of the Piano Technicians Guild; he’s attended technical seminars from Steinway & Sons at their factory in New York and at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music; Jeff was the ACL Music Festival piano tuner for over a decade and continues to tune at ACL Live; Jeff has tuned for countless world-class musicians – including some of his favorites – such as Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Randy Newman, Elton John, Norah Jones, Paul Simon, James Taylor, and Jon Batiste.
